How much to fix?
There are three causes for
this problem. Most common is the excessive buildup of tape
contaminants on the bottom of the video heads (drum), which
does not allow the tape to contact the heads properly. A professional
cleaning will take care of this problem.
The second common cause (XL1A
only) happens when the camera takes a moderate to severe impact.
In this case, the mounting assembly for the drum breaks, and
allows the drum to fall out of position, producing the symptoms
above. The drum base assembly will have to be replaced, and
the tape path will have to be realigned. Expect to pay major
labor. The drum base costs less than $20.00.
Finally, the heads themselves
are defective. Expect to pay to major labor, and the cost
of the video heads.
